Mitsubishi 2.0L turbocharged aluminum-block inline-four used in the Lancer Evolution X (2008-2016). GEMA co-development with Hyundai and Chrysler.
4G63 Engine
Mitsubishi's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four powering the Lancer Evolution I–IX. Renowned for durability and high power potential, it became the benchmark for all-wheel drive turbocharged performance in the 1990s and 2000s.
7M-GTE

A
Ackermann Geometry
The steering geometry principle that turns the inside wheel through a tighter arc than the outside wheel during cornering, preventing tire scrub. Anti-Ackermann (opposite geometry) can improve high-speed cornering in racing applications.
AE86 (Trueno/Levin)
The chassis code for the 1983–1987 Toyota Corolla Sprinter Trueno and Levin, powered by the naturally aspirated 4A-GE twin-cam engine. Immortalized by the manga/anime Initial D, the AE86 is a lightweight rear-wheel-drive icon in drift culture.
Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR)
The mass ratio of air to fuel during combustion. Stoichiometric (theoretically perfect) gasoline AFR is 14.7:1. Tuned JDM turbo engines run rich (11.5:1 to 12.5:1) under boost to lower combustion temperatures and prevent detonation. E85 stoichiometric is 9.7:1 — more fuel volume but cooler burn.
Aluminum Radiator
A larger-capacity all-aluminum radiator replacing the OEM plastic-tank unit. Common JDM brands include Koyo, Mishimoto, ARC, and Trust/Greddy. Required for built turbo engines making 400+ wheel hp. Pairs with an upgraded thermostat (lower opening temperature) and high-flow water pump for full cooling system upgrade.
ARP Head Studs
Premium aftermarket head studs manufactured by ARP (Automotive Racing Products). Essential for high-boost applications, replacing factory torque-to-yield head bolts.
ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All-Electronic Torque Split)
Nissan's electronically controlled all-wheel drive system used in the Skyline GT-R. It normally operates in rear-wheel drive and transfers up to 50% of torque to the front wheels when sensors detect wheel slip.
Auction Grade
A standardized condition rating (1-5, plus S for new) used at Japanese car auctions. Grade 4+ is excellent; 3.5 is average with minor issues; below 3 indicates significant wear or damage. The auction sheet also details specific defects with location codes. Never buy below grade 3 for import.
Auction Grade 2
A condition rating indicating significant damage such as deep scratches, large dents, rust, or heavy repairs. Grade 2 vehicles require substantial cosmetic or structural work and are often purchased for parts or major restoration.
Auction Grade 3
A condition rating for vehicles with visible scratches, dents, or repairs that are noticeable but not severe. Grade 3 cars are in average used condition and typically priced accordingly; most daily drivers fall in this range.
Auction Grade 4
A condition rating for vehicles with small scratches, minor dents, or light repairs that do not detract significantly from appearance. Grade 4 is considered very good used condition and is highly sought after by importers.
Auction Grade 4.5
A vehicle condition rating indicating a car in excellent used condition with only very minor surface scratches or small dents. Grade 4.5 represents near-showroom quality and commands a significant premium over lower grades.
Auction Sheet
A detailed inspection report generated for each vehicle at a Japanese auction, documenting condition ratings, mileage, interior/exterior grades, and location of any damage using a standardized diagram. Essential for evaluating JDM imports remotely.

B18C Type R
Honda 1.8L DOHC VTEC engine used in the DC2 Integra Type R (1995-2001). Hand-ported cylinder head, 200 PS factory rating.
BCA Japan (Bayauc)
A major Japanese wholesale auto auction platform operating physical and online auctions. Known for its online bidding system that allows overseas buyers to participate in real time through licensed import brokers.
Big Brake Kit (BBK)
An aftermarket brake upgrade replacing OEM calipers, rotors, and pads with larger components. BBKs reduce fade under heavy track use and shorten stopping distances. Popular brands include Brembo, AP Racing, StopTech, Endless, and Project Mu. Properly sizing a BBK requires matching wheel clearance and brake bias to the vehicle's weight distribution.
Bill of Lading
A legal shipping document issued by a carrier (typically the Japan-side freight forwarder) acknowledging receipt of the vehicle for transport. Required for customs clearance and serves as proof of ownership during the import process.
Blow-Off Valve (BOV)
A pressure relief valve that vents pressurized intake air to the atmosphere (or recirculates it) when the throttle closes suddenly. It prevents compressor surge, protects the turbocharger, and produces the characteristic flutter or whoosh sound.
Blow-Off Valve (BOV)
A pressure release valve that vents excess boost pressure when the throttle closes, preventing compressor surge. Atmospheric BOVs vent to air (iconic whoosh sound); recirculating BOVs route air back to the intake. Primarily a turbo protection device, not a performance mod.
BNR32 (R32 Skyline GT-R)
The chassis code for the 1989–1994 Nissan Skyline GT-R, the car that ended Porsche's dominance at the Bathurst 1000 and earned the nickname "Godzilla." It introduced ATTESA E-TS AWD and HICAS four-wheel steering to the GT-R lineage.
BNR33 (R33 Skyline GT-R)
The 1995–1998 Skyline GT-R featuring a longer wheelbase for improved high-speed stability. Often overshadowed by the R32 and R34, the R33 set a 7:59 Nürburgring lap time in 1996 and is now appreciated for its more compliant ride quality.
BNR34 (R34 Skyline GT-R)
The 1999–2002 Skyline GT-R, widely considered the ultimate evolution of the R32-generation GT-R. Featuring a revised RB26DETT, a Multi-Function Display, and improved ATTESA ET-S Pro AWD, the R34 is among the most coveted JDM collector cars.
Boost
Positive air pressure created by a turbocharger or supercharger, measured in PSI or bar. Stock boost on most JDM turbo cars: 7-14 PSI. Increasing boost is the simplest way to add power but requires supporting fuel and cooling modifications to stay safe.
Brake Bias
The proportion of total braking force distributed between front and rear axles. Most JDM cars run 65-70% front bias from the factory. Adjusting bias rearward (via proportioning valve or pad compound choice) can improve trail-braking rotation but risks rear lockup. AWD platforms like the R32-R34 GT-R typically retain factory bias to leverage AWD weight transfer.
Brake Bleeding
The process of removing air bubbles from brake hydraulic lines after pad changes, fluid swaps, or caliper service. Trapped air compresses under pedal force, producing a soft pedal. Typical JDM bleed order: passenger rear, driver rear, passenger front, driver front (furthest from master cylinder first). Track-prepped cars use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 fluid bled before every event.
Brake Pad Compound
The friction material formulation used in brake pads. Street pads (organic, low-metallic) are quiet but fade quickly. Track pads (semi-metallic, ceramic) tolerate heat but can damage rotors when cold. Common JDM track pads include Endless MX72, Project Mu HC+, Ferodo DS2500, and Hawk DTC-60. Compound choice depends on use case and brake operating temperature range.
Brake Proportioning Valve
A valve in the rear brake circuit that limits rear brake pressure to prevent lockup under heavy braking. Adjustable proportioning valves let drivers manually tune brake bias for track use. JDM tuners often install Tilton or Wilwood adjustable valves when running aggressive front pad compounds that overpower the rear circuit.
Brake Rotor (Disc)
The cast iron or carbon disc that brake pads clamp against. Slotted rotors release gas and water from the pad surface. Cross-drilled rotors (popular but cracking-prone) reduce unsprung weight but can fail under sustained track use. Two-piece rotors with aluminum hats reduce thermal mass and unsprung weight — standard on factory NISMO and TRD-tuned cars.
Brembo
Italian brake manufacturer that supplies OEM brakes to most JDM performance cars including the R34 GT-R, S15 Silvia Spec-R, FD3S RX-7 Type RS, and Subaru WRX STI. Brembo monoblock 4-pot and 6-pot calipers are also a popular aftermarket upgrade. The yellow-painted calipers became a recognizable performance signal.
C
C30A / C32B
Honda 3.0L (C30A) and 3.2L (C32B) naturally-aspirated V6 used in the NSX NA1 and NA2. All-aluminum construction with titanium connecting rods and VTEC.
Camber
The angle of the wheel relative to vertical when viewed from the front. Negative camber (top of wheel tilts inward) improves cornering grip. Excessive negative camber (stance culture) causes uneven tire wear and reduced straight-line traction. Adjustable via camber plates or arms.
Camber Angle
The inward or outward tilt of a wheel as viewed from the front of the vehicle, measured in degrees. Negative camber (top of tire tilted inward) improves cornering grip; excessive negative camber reduces straight-line braking performance.
Canard (Dive Plane)
A small angled wing mounted on the front bumper that generates front downforce and helps balance the rear wing's lift counteraction. Canards add front grip in high-speed corners but cause drag. Common on Time Attack RX-7, R34, and Evo IX builds running serious aero packages.
Carbon Fiber Hood
A weight-reduction body panel made from carbon fiber composite that replaces the OEM steel hood. Saves 10-15 kg from the front of the car (high impact since the weight is high and forward of the front axle). JDM brands like Seibon, Top Secret, and Garage Defend are common suppliers. Often paired with a hood vent to extract underhood heat.
Caster Angle
The forward or rearward tilt of the steering axis as viewed from the side. Positive caster improves straight-line stability and steering returnability. Most JDM performance cars run higher caster than typical road cars.
CBP (Customs and Border Protection)
The U.S. federal agency responsible for regulating and facilitating international trade, including the importation of vehicles. All imported vehicles must comply with CBP entry requirements and pay applicable duties.
Coilover Suspension
A suspension unit combining a coil spring and shock absorber into a single assembly, allowing independent adjustment of ride height and damping. Coilovers are the most common suspension upgrade on JDM performance cars.
Coilovers
A combined spring and shock absorber unit that replaces factory struts, offering adjustable ride height and damping. Essential for both track performance and stance builds. Quality brands: Ohlins, KW, Tein, BC Racing. Cheap coilovers often ride harshly and fail prematurely.
Conformance Bond
A surety bond posted with NHTSA by a Registered Importer guaranteeing that a non-compliant imported vehicle will be brought into conformance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards within a specified timeframe.
Corner Weighting
The process of equalizing weight distribution across all four corners of a vehicle using adjustable coilover platforms. Proper corner weighting ensures consistent handling balance and is done after all other alignment settings are complete.
Counter Steer
Steering in the opposite direction of the slide to maintain drift balance. Essential technique for all drift driving.
CP9A (Lancer Evolution VI)
The chassis code for the 1999–2001 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, including the celebrated Tommi Mäkinen Edition. It refined the 4G63-powered AWD rally weapon formula that began with the Evolution I and set the template for later generations.
Customs Bond
A financial guarantee required by CBP ensuring that all duties, taxes, and fees owed on imported goods (including vehicles) will be paid. Importers must obtain a bond before CBP releases the vehicle.
D
D1 Grand Prix
Japanese professional drifting championship, founded 2000 by Keiichi Tsuchiya and Daijiro Inada. First organized, judged drifting championship worldwide.
Datalogging
The recording of ECU sensor channels (RPM, MAP, AFR, knock count, IAT, ignition timing, fuel pulse width, etc.) over time, used by tuners to verify engine health and refine maps. Quality datalogs are the difference between safe and ruinous JDM tuning. Most standalone ECUs and aftermarket tunes provide data via OBD2 or dedicated logging software.
DC2 Integra Type R
The second-generation Honda Integra Type R (1995–2001), featuring the high-revving B18C5 VTEC engine producing 197 hp in USDM trim and more in JDM spec. Celebrated for its mechanical LSD, close-ratio gearbox, and exceptional power-to-weight ratio.
Deregistration (抹消登録)
The formal cancellation of a vehicle's Japanese registration, required before export. Exporters receive a deregistration certificate (抹消登録証明書) needed for customs export procedures and U.S. import documentation.
Detonation (Pre-Ignition / Knock)
Uncontrolled secondary combustion in a cylinder that creates pressure spikes and damages pistons, rod bearings, and ringlands. Caused by too much spark advance, too lean an AFR, low octane fuel, or overheated intake charge. The defining engine-killer of poorly tuned JDM turbo builds. Modern tuning relies on knock sensors and conservative timing maps.
Differential Lock
A mechanism that forces both wheels on an axle to rotate at the same speed regardless of traction conditions. Diff locks are useful in off-road driving but should be disengaged on paved roads to avoid drivetrain stress.
Dog Box Transmission
A racing-style gearbox that uses dog teeth (lugs) instead of synchronizers to engage gears, enabling near-instant shifts under power. Dog boxes are loud and not smooth at low speeds but are far faster and stronger than synchro-equipped gearboxes.
Drift Angle
The angular difference between the car's actual direction of travel and its heading. Judged in professional drifting.
Drift Initiation
Technique to break rear-wheel traction and initiate a controlled drift. Methods include Scandinavian flick, clutch kick, handbrake pull, and throttle lift-off.
Drift King
Nickname for Keiichi Tsuchiya, Japanese racing driver who pioneered modern drifting techniques on touge roads in the 1970s.
E
E85 Fuel
A fuel blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline (often less ethanol in winter blends). E85 has effective octane around 105 RON, runs ~30% cooler than gasoline, and supports significantly higher boost without detonation. JDM tuners use E85 to extract 600+ wheel hp from 2JZ, RB26, and 4G63 platforms on otherwise stock fuel systems.
ECU (Engine Control Unit)
The vehicle's main computer that manages fuel injection, ignition timing, boost control, and other engine parameters. JDM ECUs often have different maps than their USDM counterparts, and reflashing or replacing the ECU is a common first tuning step.
EJ207 Engine
Subaru's 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer four-cylinder found in JDM STI models. It features a twin-scroll turbocharger and AVCS variable valve timing; EJ207 JDM heads are highly sought after for their improved porting over the USDM EJ257.
EK9 Civic Type R
The first-generation Honda Civic Type R produced from 1997 to 2000 exclusively for Japan. Fitted with the B16B 1.6-liter VTEC engine producing 185 ps at 8,200 RPM, it remains one of the highest-revving naturally aspirated engines ever put in a production car.
Electronic Boost Controller (EBC)
A solenoid-operated device that provides precise, programmable boost control with features like gear-dependent boost, boost by RPM, and anti-surge strategies. EBCs offer significantly more tunability than manual boost controllers.
Engine Displacement
The total volume of all cylinders in an engine, measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters. The RB26DETT is 2,568cc (2.6L); the 4G63 is 1,997cc (2.0L). Displacement affects power potential, torque characteristics, and tax classification (especially kei car 660cc limit).
EPA Compliance
Ensuring an imported vehicle meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards. Vehicles not originally sold in the U.S. may require catalytic converter upgrades or engine modifications to pass EPA requirements.
Export Certificate
A document issued by Japanese authorities confirming a vehicle's deregistration and clearance for export. Required by the destination country's customs and serves as proof of legal export from Japan.
External Wastegate
A separate valve mounted outside the turbo housing that bleeds exhaust gas around the turbine wheel to control boost pressure. External wastegates allow more precise boost control and higher flow capacity than internal wastegates.

F20C
Honda 2.0L DOHC VTEC engine used in the S2000 AP1. 250 HP factory rating, 9,000 rpm redline, all-aluminum with FRM cylinder liners.
FD3S (RX-7)
The third-generation Mazda RX-7 produced from 1992 to 2002, powered by the twin-sequential turbocharged 13B-REW rotary engine. Known for exceptional weight distribution (50/50), balanced handling, and a uniquely analog driving character.
Fender Flare (Overfender)
An extension to the wheel arch that adds width to accommodate wider wheels and tires. Fender flares can be bolt-on (Liberty Walk style) or molded permanently to the body (Pandem, Rocket Bunny). The widebody trend in JDM culture started with the Bosozoku scene in the 1970s and was revived globally by Kei Miura's Rocket Bunny kits.
Final Drive Ratio
The gear ratio between the driveshaft and the driven wheels, affecting acceleration and top speed. A numerically higher ratio provides more acceleration at the expense of top speed; commonly changed in JDM builds for track or drag use.
Flex Fuel Sensor
An ethanol content sensor (typically GM-sourced) that lets a tuned ECU dynamically adjust fuel and ignition for any E0-E85 blend. Allows JDM tuners to safely run E85 corn fuel without permanent retunes between fillups. Required on any 600+ wheel-hp build hoping to safely mix pump and race gas.
Forged Wheel
A wheel manufactured by forging billet aluminum under high pressure rather than casting it. Forged wheels are 30-40% lighter than equivalent cast wheels and significantly stronger. JDM forged wheel manufacturers include RAYS (TE37, ZE40, G25), Volk Racing, Work Meister, and Advan Racing GT. The TE37 is arguably the most copied wheel in JDM history.
Front Splitter
A flat horizontal panel extending forward from the front bumper, creating a low-pressure zone underneath the front of the car to generate downforce. Splitters require structural support rods to handle aerodynamic loads at speed. The CW Motorsports and Voltex front splitters used on time-attack RX-7s set the JDM standard.
Front-Mount Intercooler (FMIC)
An intercooler placed in front of the radiator to maximize airflow and cooling efficiency. FMICs reduce intake charge temperature more effectively than side-mount or top-mount intercoolers, though they require longer charge piping.
Fuji Speedway
Japan's premier racing circuit at the base of Mount Fuji. Hosts Super GT, Super Formula, and various motorsport events. Known for its 1.5km main straight.
G
GDB (Impreza WRX STI)
The chassis code covering the 2000–2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI models. JDM GDB STIs featured the EJ207 engine, Brembo brakes, and DCCD driver-controlled center differential — equipment not always available in export-spec variants.
Gentleman's Agreement
Voluntary Japanese automotive industry pact (1989-2004) limiting production cars to 280 PS factory rating. Actual engine output often exceeded this limit.
Greddy / Trust
Japanese tuning company (Trust in Japan, Greddy in USA) founded 1977. Known for intercoolers, boost controllers, and blow-off valves.
Grey Market Vehicle
A vehicle imported legally but outside the official manufacturer distribution channel — typically a foreign-spec model not originally intended for the U.S. market. Grey market vehicles require RI and ICI processing if under 25 years old.
Group A Racing
FIA racing category for production-based touring cars (1980s-1990s). R32 GT-R dominated Group A touring car championships.
GT Wing
A large adjustable rear wing mounted on chassis-attached uprights, designed to generate measurable downforce at speed. Common on time-attack and Super GT cars. Effective only when mounted in clean airflow above the roofline. Voltex, APR, and Garage Defend make popular JDM-fitment GT wings. Note: a GT wing differs from a "spoiler," which only redirects airflow without generating significant lift counteraction.
H
Hakosuka
Japanese nickname for the first-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R (C10), produced 1969-1972. 'Hako' = box, 'suka' = Skyline.
Helical LSD
A gear-based limited-slip differential that uses helical (angled) gears to create resistance proportional to torque difference. It provides smooth, progressive lockup without clutch packs and requires no maintenance fluid changes.
HKS
Japanese tuning company founded 1973 by Hiroyuki Hasegawa. Pioneered aftermarket turbocharger kits, blow-off valves, and boost controllers.
Homologation
The process of certifying a vehicle meets the regulatory and safety standards of a target country. JDM homologation refers to cars built specifically for the Japanese domestic market to meet JDM regulations, which differ from U.S. standards.
Hub-Centric Rings
Plastic or aluminum rings that fill the gap between a wheel's center bore and the vehicle's hub. Hub-centric fitment ensures the wheel is centered on the hub rather than just on the bolts, reducing vibration at high speeds.
I
Import Broker
A licensed agent in Japan that facilitates vehicle purchases at auction on behalf of foreign buyers, handling bidding, payment, inspection coordination, and shipping logistics. Choosing a reputable broker is critical for a successful JDM import.
Independent Commercial Importer (ICI)
An EPA-authorized entity that can import vehicles not certified to U.S. emissions standards and bring them into compliance. ICIs handle both NHTSA and EPA compliance for non-exempt vehicles.
Intercooler
A heat exchanger that cools compressed air from the turbo before it enters the engine. Cooler air is denser, producing more power and reducing detonation risk. Front-mount intercoolers (FMIC) are more efficient than top-mount (TMIC) but require piping modifications.
Interior Grade
A separate rating on auction sheets for the cabin condition of a vehicle, using letters A through E (A=excellent, E=poor). It evaluates seat wear, headliner stains, dashboard cracks, and carpet condition independently of the exterior grade.
J
JAA (Japan Auto Auctions)
A collective term for the network of wholesale vehicle auction houses operating throughout Japan. The main auction houses include USS, TAP, CAA, JU, and HAA, each with their own grading standards and buyer networks.
JAAI Inspection (Japan Auto Appraisal Institute)
An optional independent inspection offered at major Japanese auctions where a certified appraiser physically examines the vehicle and issues a detailed condition report. Provides additional verification beyond the standard auction sheet.
Japanese Auction Grade System
A standardized vehicle condition rating used at Japanese auto auctions, typically ranging from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent), with S (superior) above 5 at some houses. Grades reflect exterior, interior, and mechanical condition separately.
JCI (Japan Compulsory Insurance)
Japan's mandatory third-party liability insurance, required for all vehicles on Japanese roads and tied to the shaken inspection cycle. JCI is not the same as comprehensive insurance and does not cover damage to one's own vehicle.
JDM (Japanese Domestic Market)
Vehicles manufactured for sale exclusively in Japan. JDM cars often have different specifications than export models — right-hand drive, Japan-only engines, unique trim levels, and stricter emissions equipment. The term is frequently misused to describe any Japanese-brand car.
JDM Import
A Japanese Domestic Market vehicle imported into another country (usually after the 25-year rule exemption kicks in). Distinguished from original equipment cars sold in the target country.
JDM Import Broker
Licensed agent facilitating vehicle imports from Japan to other countries. Handles auction purchase, shipping, customs clearance, and state DMV registration.
JUN Auto Mechanic
Japanese precision engine builder founded 1972. Known for drag racing builds producing 1,500+ HP on reinforced stock platforms.
JZA80 Supra (A80)
The chassis code designation for the 1993–2002 Toyota Supra. JDM models received the twin-turbocharged 2JZ-GTE producing 280 hp (factory), while USDM models also got the 2JZ-GTE but with different tune and equipment levels.
JZX100 (Chaser/Mark II/Cresta)

Knock Sensor
A piezoelectric vibration sensor mounted on the engine block that detects the high-frequency pressure waves caused by detonation. The ECU uses knock sensor signal to retard ignition timing in real time when knock is detected. Modern standalone ECUs (Haltech, MoTeC, Link, Syvecs) include knock control loops that protect tuned engines from bad fuel batches.

Lightweight Flywheel
A reduced-mass replacement flywheel (typically aluminum or chromoly) that lets the engine rev faster between gear changes. Weight reduction of 40-60% compared to OEM is common. Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)

LSD Preload

Panda Trueno
Black-and-white painted AE86 Trueno. Named for its panda-like coloring. Made famous by the Initial D anime and manga.
PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter)
The diameter of the circle formed by the wheel's bolt holes, combined with the number of bolts (e.g. 5x114.3 is common on many JDM vehicles). PCD must match both the vehicle's hub and the aftermarket wheel for proper fitment.
Pillow Ball Mount (Top Hat)
A rigid spherical bearing replacing the factory rubber upper strut mount, eliminating flex and improving steering feedback and camber response. Pillow ball mounts increase NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) but significantly sharpen handling.
Proxy Bidding

RHD (Right-Hand Drive)
Vehicle configuration where the steering wheel is on the right side, designed for driving on the left side of the road (UK, Japan, Australia). All true JDM imports are RHD. Legal in all US states but requires adaptation for passing and drive-throughs.
Rocket Bunny / Pandem
Aero kits designed by Kei Miura under the TRA Kyoto brand. Rocket Bunny kits use exposed bolt-on rivets and aggressive overfenders that became globally iconic in the 2010s. Pandem is the same designer's street-focused subbrand. Common on S13/S14/S15 Silvia, BRZ/86, and FD RX-7 builds.
Roll Center
The theoretical point in space around which the vehicle body rolls during cornering, determined by suspension geometry. A higher roll center reduces body roll but increases jacking forces; tuning roll center height is important for balanced handling.
Roll-On Roll-Off
Shipping method where vehicles are driven onto and off the ship rather than containerized. Cheaper than container shipping but with reduced weather protection.
RX-7 FC
Second generation Mazda RX-7 (1986-1991), chassis code FC3S. Powered by the 13B rotary engine in naturally-aspirated or Turbo II configurations.
S
S15 Silvia

Scrub Radius
The distance between where the steering axis meets the ground and the tire's contact patch center. Negative scrub radius (common on AWD cars) improves braking stability; wide wheels can alter scrub radius significantly.
Sequential Gearbox
A transmission where gears are selected in sequential order (one up, one down) using a shift lever or paddle shifters, without the H-pattern of a conventional manual. Common in motorsport and high-performance JDM vehicles.
Sequential Twin-Turbo
A forced induction setup using two turbochargers of different sizes that activate in sequence: a smaller unit spools quickly at low RPM for minimal lag, while a larger unit takes over at higher RPM for maximum power.
Shaken (車検)
Japan's mandatory vehicle inspection required every 2 years (3 years for new cars). Covers safety, emissions, and roadworthiness. Shaken costs escalate as cars age, which is why many Japanese owners sell cars at 5-7 years — creating the supply of well-maintained used JDM cars for export.

Short Shifter
A modified gear lever with a shortened throw distance and pivot point repositioned closer to the linkage base. Short Throw Shifter
An aftermarket or OEM-upgraded gear shift mechanism that reduces the travel distance required to move between gears. Shorter throws allow faster gear changes, improving driver feel and shift speed in performance driving.
Show or Display Exemption
A NHTSA exemption allowing importation of certain historically significant vehicles that do not meet U.S. safety standards, but restricts annual driving to 2,500 miles. The vehicle must be of "decided historical or technological significance."

Single Turbo Conversion

Staggered Wheel Fitment

Stainless Steel Brake Line

Strut Tower Brace
A bar connecting the tops of the front or rear strut towers to reduce chassis flex during hard cornering. By triangulating the tower connection, strut braces improve steering precision and predictability, especially on older unibody JDM chassis.
Subframe Rigidity
The stiffness of the engine and suspension subframe, affecting handling precision and chassis feel. Subframe braces and bushings are common JDM upgrades that reduce flex, improve suspension geometry consistency, and sharpen steering response.
Super AWD (S-AWD)
Mitsubishi's advanced all-wheel drive system used in the Lancer Evolution. It can not only distribute torque front-to-rear but also vector torque left-to-right on the rear axle, actively improving cornering response.

Japan's top touring car championship (formerly JGTC). Features factory Nissan, Toyota, and Honda race cars in GT500 and GT300 classes.
Supra MK4

Sway Bar (Anti-Roll Bar)
A torsion spring connecting left and right suspension that resists body roll during cornering by linking both sides. Stiffer sway bars reduce body roll and can adjust front/rear balance, affecting understeer and oversteer characteristics.

Tire Compound
The rubber formulation determining grip versus longevity. Street tires (200+ treadwear) last 30,000+ miles. Extreme performance street tires like Yokohama Advan AD08 (180 TW), Bridgestone RE71RS (200 TW), and Toyo R888R (100 TW) trade longevity for grip. Track-only slicks have no treadwear rating. Lower treadwear = more grip and faster wear.
Tire Pressure (Hot vs Cold)
Tires gain ~0.5 psi for every 5 °C (10 °F) of temperature increase. JDM track day setup typically targets a "hot" pressure (after 3+ flying laps) of 32-36 psi for street tires and 28-32 psi for R-comp slicks. Starting cold pressures are usually 4-6 psi lower. Tire temperatures and pressures are recorded after every track session.
Toe Alignment
The direction wheels point relative to the vehicle centerline, viewed from above. Toe-in (front of tires closer together) improves straight-line stability; toe-out improves turn-in response. Track alignment differs from street alignment.

Torsen Differential
A torque-sensing worm-gear differential that automatically biases torque toward the wheel with more grip. Named for "Torque Sensing," it is used in numerous performance vehicles including the Supra and various Audi Quattro applications.
Transfer Case
A gearbox that distributes power from the transmission to the front and rear axles in AWD or 4WD vehicles. In JDM performance cars with AWD, the transfer case is typically electronically controlled for torque vectoring.
Treadwear Rating (UTQG)
A US-standardized number on every street tire indicating relative wear life. Baseline is 100. A tire rated 400 should last 4x as long as the baseline. JDM time attack and grassroots motorsport classes typically cap competitors at 100, 140, or 200 treadwear to control tire grip levels. Lower treadwear = more grip.

Japanese racing circuit in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture. Famous for time attack events and the 'Tsukuba lap record' ranking system for modified sports cars.
Turbocharger
An exhaust-driven compressor that forces more air into the engine, increasing power output. Iconic JDM turbos: Garrett, HKS, Tomei, IHI. Twin-turbo setups (Supra 2JZ-GTE, 300ZX VG30DETT) use two smaller turbos for reduced lag. The heart of JDM performance culture.
Turbocharger
A forced induction device driven by exhaust gases that compresses intake air, allowing the engine to burn more fuel and produce more power. Turbo lag — the delay before boost builds — is reduced through larger exhaust manifolds and reduced restriction.
Twin Disc Clutch
A clutch with two friction discs instead of one, doubling the torque capacity without increasing pedal effort. Required for 600+ wheel hp builds. JDM brands include OS Giken, Exedy Hyper, ATS Carbon, and Cusco. Twin discs produce a characteristic "rattle" at idle that became a recognizable JDM tuner sound.

Underbody Diffuser
A shaped panel under the rear of the car that accelerates airflow exiting from beneath the chassis, lowering pressure under the car and generating downforce. Viscous Coupling

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control)

Wastegate
A valve that controls boost pressure by diverting exhaust gas away from the turbine. Internal wastegates are built into the turbo housing; external wastegates are separate units offering more precise control. Essential for regulating boost levels and protecting the engine.
Water-to-Air Intercooler / Water Cooler
A cooling system that uses circulating water through a heat exchanger instead of (or in addition to) a traditional air-to-air intercooler. Water-to-air systems handle short bursts of high boost more efficiently — ideal for drag racing. Liquid-cooled chargecooler systems are common in modern JDM builds (e.g., GR Yaris, A90 Supra factory units).
Wheel Offset (ET)
The distance in millimeters from the wheel's mounting face to its centerline. A positive ET (e.g. ET+45) means the hub face is outboard of center; negative ET pushes the wheel outward. ET affects clearance, scrub radius, and stance.
Wideband O2 Sensor
An air-fuel ratio sensor (commonly Bosch LSU 4.9 or NTK UEGO) that reads accurately from 10:1 to 20:1 AFR. Replaces the narrowband sensor used by stock ECUs which only signals "rich vs. lean." Required for any tuned forced-induction build. Mounted in the exhaust collector or downpipe.
