Naturally Aspirated (NA)

An engine that breathes without forced induction (no turbo or supercharger). Relies on atmospheric pressure alone. NA engines offer linear power delivery and simpler maintenance. Iconic JDM NA engines: Honda B16/B18 (VTEC), Toyota 4A-GE, Mazda 13B (rotary).

Engine Displacement

The total volume of all cylinders in an engine, measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters. The RB26DETT is 2,568cc (2.6L); the 4G63 is 1,997cc (2.0L). Displacement affects power potential, torque characteristics, and tax classification (especially kei car 660cc limit).

Turbocharger

An exhaust-driven compressor that forces more air into the engine, increasing power output. Iconic JDM turbos: Garrett, HKS, Tomei, IHI. Twin-turbo setups (Supra 2JZ-GTE, 300ZX VG30DETT) use two smaller turbos for reduced lag. The heart of JDM performance culture.

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control)

Honda's variable valve timing system that switches between two cam profiles at a set RPM, dramatically changing engine character. Below VTEC engagement: fuel-efficient and smooth. Above: aggressive power delivery. The "VTEC just kicked in, yo" moment is a JDM cultural touchstone.
