The Toyota GR86, launched in 2022 as the successor to the first-generation 86, represents Toyota's continued commitment to the affordable RWD sports coupe category. Built on an improved version of the shared Toyota/Subaru platform with a new FA24 engine, the GR86 addresses the chief complaint about the original 86: not enough power. The new 2.4-liter boxer produces 228 hp — up from 205 — and delivers notably more torque across the powerband.

The FA24 Engine

The key update is the engine. Toyota and Subaru co-developed the FA24 as the successor to the FA20:

  • Displacement: 2.4L (2,387cc) naturally aspirated boxer
  • Output: 228 hp at 7,000 rpm, 184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm
  • Layout: Horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder
  • Redline: 7,500 rpm
  • Injection: Direct injection only (simpler than the FA20's dual injection)

The FA24 addresses the biggest criticism of the original FA20: "not enough torque in the middle of the rev range." The new engine has a notably flatter torque curve, making it more drivable in daily traffic without needing to keep the revs high.

The Chassis

The GR86 chassis uses a mix of carryover and revised components:

  • Stiffer body: Significantly more torsional rigidity
  • Revised suspension: Stiffer front anti-roll bar, updated rear geometry
  • Same multi-link rear, MacPherson front: Fundamental layout unchanged
  • New Torsen LSD: Limited-slip differential is now standard
  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires: Stock rubber is much improved

Curb weight: 1,270 kg — essentially unchanged from the first generation despite the larger engine.

GR Brand and Gazoo Racing

The "GR" in GR86 stands for "Gazoo Racing" — Toyota's performance sub-brand. The GR86 is part of a lineup that includes the GR Supra, GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR86. All GR products share a focus on driver engagement and motorsport heritage.

The GR86's inclusion in the GR lineup signals Toyota's serious commitment to sports car production — even through the electric vehicle transition.

Production Variants and Options

  • GR86 (base): Essentials
  • GR86 Premium: Upgraded interior, heated seats, wireless charging
  • GR86 SuperCharger (Japan only): A supercharged variant (not turbocharged)
  • GR86 10th Anniversary (2022): Celebrating 10 years of the 86 platform

The GR86 is built in Japan and exported globally. US MSRP starts around $28,000.

Today's Market

The GR86 is still in active production. Used examples trade at approximately $25,000-$35,000, close to MSRP due to sustained demand. The 10th Anniversary Edition commands a small premium.

Legacy

The Toyota GR86 is proof that the affordable RWD sports coupe still has a place in the modern automotive landscape. It's the most buyer-friendly new sports car under $30,000, it's relatively easy to maintain, and its performance has been refined significantly from the first generation.

For drivers who want a modern, naturally aspirated sports coupe without the complexity of turbochargers, hybrid drivetrains, or electronic stability nannies, the GR86 is the answer. It's the simplest sports car Toyota currently sells — and that simplicity is its greatest virtue.
