JDM Year in Review: 2015 — The Modern Renaissance

2015 represents the JDM scene's modern renaissance. After several years of decline (the bubble had burst, magazines were closing, the youth car culture was shifting), Japanese performance cars were experiencing a renaissance driven by import legality (R32 GT-Rs became US-legal in 2014), social media influence (Instagram and YouTube made JDM globally visible), and a new generation of buyers willing to pay premium prices for clean examples. 2015 was the year JDM enthusiasm went from niche cult to mainstream collector category.

Major Car Launches

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Edition: Mitsubishi announced the end of the Lancer Evolution line in 2015, releasing limited "Final Edition" variants worldwide. After 24 years of Evo production, Mitsubishi was leaving the rally homologation business. The Final Editions became immediate collectibles.

Nissan GT-R R35 Nismo update: Nissan continued refining the R35 GT-R Nismo with each model year. By 2015, the R35 Nismo was producing 600+ hp and lapping the Nürburgring in under 7:30.

Honda Civic Type R FK2 (Europe-only): The fifth-generation Civic Type R launched in Europe with a turbocharged K20C1 engine producing 306 hp. It was the first turbocharged Type R, controversial among purists but commercially significant. The FK2 wasn't sold in the US — that would come with the FK8 in 2017.

Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ continued: The Toyota/Subaru sports coupe partnership continued production with refinements but no major changes.

Motorsport in 2015

Sebastien Ogier wins WRC: Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier won his third consecutive WRC drivers' championship. WRC had moved past the Japanese manufacturer dominant era.

Super GT continues: Japanese GT racing remained strong. The transition to GT500 Class One (shared with DTM) was being planned for 2014-2017 implementation.

Formula Drift maturity: Formula Drift was now in its 13th season and had become a mature professional series with consistent rules and major sponsorship.

Cultural Moments

R32 import boom: The Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R became eligible for US import in August 2014 (cars manufactured in 1989). Throughout 2015, the influx of clean R32 GT-Rs into the US market created a price boom. From around 2010-2015, R32 GT-R prices in the US went from around $20,000 to $40,000-$60,000 for clean examples.

Bring a Trailer growth: Bring a Trailer had become the dominant online auction venue for JDM collectibles. Throughout 2015, BaT auctions consistently set price records for various JDM cars, demonstrating that clean examples were genuinely appreciating in value.

Tsuchiya retirement-ish: Keiichi Tsuchiya was reducing his on-camera magazine work as Best Motoring and Hot Version transitioned to other formats. The era of monthly Tsuchiya video content was ending.

Why 2015 Matters

2015 is when JDM culture became mainstream collectible. Prices were rising, clean examples were getting harder to find, and the cars launched in the 1990s (R34 GT-R, Supra MK4, RX-7 FD, NSX) were entering their second decade as recognized collector vehicles.

The 25-year US import rule meant that by 2015, the entire 1990 production year of JDM cars was eligible for legal US import. This created an annual cascade — every year, another model year of JDM cars would become legal, fueling continued enthusiasm and demand.
