The Subaru Forester STI combines WRX STI hardware with a practical SUV body. Covers all generations and what to look for when buying.

Subaru Forester STI: The Unlikely Performance Icon Buyer's Guide

When Subaru's Tecnica International division turned its attention to the Forester, the result was one of the most entertaining vehicles in JDM history. The Forester STI, produced from 2000 to 2014, combined the EJ-series turbocharged boxer engine, symmetrical AWD, and STI chassis tuning with a compact SUV body that could carry a family's worth of cargo.

The Forester STI Lineage

SF5 STI (2000-2002): The EJ205 turbocharged 2.0-liter producing 250 horsepower. STI suspension with Bilstein dampers, Brembo brakes, rear LSD, and the distinctive pink STI badging. Japan-only with extremely limited production, making it the rarest variant.

SG5 STI (2004-2007): Moved to the SG platform. Six-speed manual transmission shared with the Impreza STI, driver-controlled center differential (DCCD), inverted strut front suspension. Power rated at 265 horsepower. The Type M variant added Recaro seats and sharper suspension tuning.

SG9 STI (2005-2008): The most refined classic Forester STI. Revised engine management, updated interior, six-speed manual standard. Commands the highest collector values.

SH5 tS (2009-2013): Tuned by STI rather than full STI treatment. STI suspension, flexible strut tower bar, STI brake pads. EJ25 turbo producing 230 horsepower with manual or automatic options.

SJ5 tS (2014): FA20DIT direct-injection turbo producing 280 horsepower, CVT only. Cherry red accents, STI suspension, more aggressive front lip.

Why Choose a Forester STI Over an Impreza STI

Ground clearance: 50-70mm more than an Impreza STI. Genuine off-road capability on unpaved roads, trails, and snow.

Cargo capacity: Approximately 450 liters with rear seats up, over 1,500 liters folded. Viable for family duties, road trips, and carrying track day equipment.

Visibility: Higher seating position and larger glass area make it a more relaxing daily driver.

Insurance: Classified as small SUV rather than sports car, often resulting in lower premiums.

Buying Guide

EJ20/EJ25 turbo engines: Head gasket seepage common at high mileage. The 2.0L EJ20 turbo in JDM models is generally more reliable than the EJ25 here.

Turbocharger: Check for shaft play and listen for bearing whine under boost. VF-series turbos are reliable but have finite service lives.

Transmission and center differential: Check shift quality in all gears, DCCD operation, and any binding during tight low-speed turns.

Suspension bushings: Deteriorate faster than on the Impreza due to greater body roll stress. Inspect front lower control arm bushings, rear trailing arm bushings, and subframe mounts.

Off-road abuse: Ground clearance invites off-road use. Check for underside scraping, bent exhaust, and stone damage to oil pan and transmission case.

Modification Philosophy

Suspension: Maintain usable ground clearance. Quality coilovers with 15-20mm lowering over stock balance handling with rough road capability.

Engine: Up-pipe, downpipe, intake, and ECU tune bring EJ20 to approximately 300 HP reliably. The Forester's larger engine bay provides better intercooler airflow than the Impreza.

Brakes: Important since the Forester is approximately 100 kg heavier than the Impreza STI. Factory Brembos are adequate for spirited driving but not sustained track use.

Market Values

SG5 and SG9 STI models: $12,000-$25,000 in Japan, clean low-mileage up to $30,000. The SF5 STI commands premiums when available but is increasingly hard to find in good condition.

The Forester STI is the most rational irrational choice for someone needing one car that handles school runs, gravel roads, and track days equally well.
