R34 GT-R M-Spec Nur: The Touring GT-R Ultimate
The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 M-Spec Nur, released in February 2002, is the rarest street-legal R34 GT-R variant. It combines the comfort-oriented M-Spec (which emphasized ride quality over track focus) with the Nur-specific N1 block and aerodynamic upgrades. Only 285 were ever produced, making it rarer than the V-Spec II Nur (750 built) and approaching the rarity of the Nismo Z-Tune (20 built). It's the R34 for drivers who wanted the ultimate N1-block power without sacrificing ride comfort.
The M-Spec Philosophy
Before understanding the M-Spec Nur, you need to understand the M-Spec. The M-Spec (launched in 2001) was Nissan's "touring" R34 variant — designed for drivers who wanted GT-R performance but with better ride quality for daily use. Key M-Spec features:
- Softer suspension: Revised spring rates and damper valving for better ride compliance
- Ripple Control dampers: Special dampers designed to absorb road imperfections
- Leather interior: Full leather with improved sound deadening
- Optional auto-dimming rearview mirror: Luxury touch not available on other R34 trims
- Standard satellite navigation: Integrated MFD with nav functionality
The M-Spec was the R34 for drivers who wanted comfort without sacrificing the core GT-R experience.
The Nur Addition
In February 2002, Nissan released the M-Spec Nur — adding the Nur-specific modifications to the M-Spec:
- N1 block: The reinforced engine block from the V-Spec II Nur
- Revised ECU mapping: Optimized for the N1 block's improved cooling capability
- Titanium exhaust components: From the V-Spec II Nur
- Aerodynamic upgrades: Front splitter, rear diffuser, and revised air dam
- Dedicated gauge cluster: Nur-specific instruments
- Gold Brembo calipers: Aesthetic upgrade
The result was a touring R34 GT-R with the same engine reliability and power potential as the V-Spec II Nur — but with comfort suspension and leather interior.
Production: Only 285 Ever Built
The M-Spec Nur was produced in very limited quantities:
- Total production: 285 units
- All JDM market: None sold outside Japan at original MSRP
- February 2002 - August 2002: Short production window before R34 production ended
Today's Market
The M-Spec Nur is one of the most collectible R34 GT-R variants:
- Clean examples: $300,000-$500,000
- Low-mileage concours examples: $500,000-$800,000
- Ultimate condition (matching-numbers, original paint, low miles): $800,000-$1,200,000
For reference, a V-Spec II Nur trades for $400,000-$980,000+, and the Nismo Z-Tune is effectively priceless. The M-Spec Nur sits between these two — rarer than V-Spec II Nur but more comfortable than either.
Legacy
The M-Spec Nur represents an unusual concept: a luxury grand tourer with race-car engine reliability. Most performance car buyers want either comfort or performance, not both in the same car. The M-Spec Nur was for buyers who wanted both — and only 285 of them could afford it.
For R34 GT-R collectors, the M-Spec Nur is the rarest streetable R34 variant. It's the car for the enthusiast who appreciates the N1 engine block's reliability but doesn't want to sacrifice daily driveability. That's an unusual combination, which is exactly why so few were built.
