Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune: The 500 HP Masterpiece
Only 20 Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tunes were ever built. The 2.8L stroker RB26 produced 500 PS catalog (600+ actual). Today they trade for $1-2 million. This is the full story.

Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune: The 500 HP Masterpiece
The Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune, released in 2005, is the ultimate expression of the R34 GT-R and one of the most valuable Japanese production cars ever built. Only 20 were ever produced (19 sold, 1 retained by Nismo). Priced at ¥17,700,000 (approximately $160,000) when new, the Z-Tune now trades at auction for $1-$2+ million. It's the final R34 development — a Nismo-built evolution of the platform that took every good idea from the R34 program and pushed it further.
Origin Story
R34 GT-R production ended in August 2002. Nissan had already committed to the R35 program, and the R34 was officially finished. But at Nismo — Nissan's motorsport subsidiary — engineers began a secret project to build the "ultimate R34." The goals were:
- Take an R34 V-Spec II Nur (the most track-focused R34)
- Rebuild the engine with Nismo's race-specification parts
- Upgrade the chassis with race-derived components
- Produce a limited-run "final" R34 for collectors
The project was approved in late 2002 and took three years to complete. First deliveries happened in 2005.
The RB26 Z-Tune Engine
The heart of the Z-Tune was a modified RB26DETT:
- Displacement: 2.8L (stroked from 2.6L) using a custom crankshaft and stroker kit
- Output: 500 PS catalog (gentleman's limit pretense — actual output was 550-600 hp)
- Block: N1 block with additional reinforcement
- Pistons: Forged
- Rods: Titanium
- Turbos: Larger, higher-flow compressors
- Intercooler: Massive front-mount unit
- ECU: Nismo-tuned with race mapping
The engine was hand-assembled at Nismo's Omori factory by a dedicated team. Each engine was broken in on a dyno for 6+ hours before installation.
Chassis and Aero Modifications
The Z-Tune also received significant chassis updates:
- Suspension: Nismo-specific coilovers with custom damper valving
- Brakes: Larger Brembo rotors and calipers
- Wheels: 18-inch lightweight forged
- Body panels: Carbon fiber hood, trunk, and rear spoiler
- Aero kit: Front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser designed for downforce
Curb weight was reduced to 1,540 kg from the base R34's 1,560 kg.
Only 20 Ever Built
Nismo's decision to build only 20 Z-Tunes was intentional:
- Production capacity: Nismo had limited engineering resources
- Price point: At ¥17.7 million each, demand was naturally limited
- Exclusivity: A truly ultimate R34 had to be rare
Of the 20 built:
- 19 were sold to customers (all in Japan initially)
- 1 was retained by Nismo for the Omori Museum
Nordburgring Record Attempt
Nismo took a Z-Tune to the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 2005 with driver Toshio Suzuki. The car lapped the 20.8 km circuit in approximately 7:36 — one of the fastest Japanese production car times of the era. The time demonstrated that the Z-Tune was not just a status symbol but a genuinely capable track machine.
Market Value Today
The Z-Tune is one of the most valuable Japanese cars ever built:
- 2019 sale: ¥140 million (~$1.3 million) at BH Auction in Japan
- 2022 sale: Approximately $1.8 million in private Japanese sale
- Current estimated value: $2 million+ for mint examples
Only a few Z-Tunes have come up for public auction. Most are held in private collections in Japan, Hong Kong, and the Middle East.
Legacy
The Nismo R34 GT-R Z-Tune is the ultimate R34. It's what happens when Nismo is given full freedom to build the final word on a platform with no constraints except performance. The 500 hp catalog rating was a gentleman's understatement — in reality, the Z-Tune was the fastest, most track-focused R34 ever built.
For GT-R collectors, the Z-Tune is the holy grail. It's the proof that Nismo could build a world-class performance car when given the opportunity. And with only 20 ever produced, it's one of the rarest Japanese production cars ever — a status that has driven its value into the multi-million dollar range.
