Nismo 270R: The Rare R32 Nismo Variant
The Nismo 270R was a limited-edition variant of the R32 Skyline GT-R built by Nismo in 1991. Only 20 were produced, and the car represented an early experiment by Nismo in building factory-tuned R32 GT-Rs for customers who wanted more than the standard car offered. It's one of the rarest R32 variants ever made, and its combination of Nismo engineering and R32 heritage makes it extraordinarily valuable.
The Project Origin
In 1991, with the R32 GT-R dominating Group A racing and becoming a cult street car, Nismo's engineering team wanted to demonstrate what the platform could achieve with factory-blessed upgrades. They built the Nismo 270R as a limited-edition variant that would feature:
- Modified RB26DETT: Tuned to produce 270 PS (from 280 PS standard, with improved driveability)
- Nismo-specific aerodynamic package: Front splitter, rear spoiler, side skirts
- Nismo-tuned suspension: Revised damper valving and spring rates
- Weight reduction: Various weight-saving modifications
- Nismo-specific interior: Bucket seats, gauge cluster changes
The car was aimed at wealthy Japanese enthusiasts who wanted a factory-tuned R32 without having to go to third-party tuners.
Production: Only 20 Built
Nismo built only 20 examples of the 270R. All were sold to customers in Japan through Nismo's direct sales channel. The small production meant the 270R was more of a statement than a commercial product.
Today's Market
Because of its extreme rarity, the Nismo 270R commands extraordinary prices when it appears. Clean examples are believed to trade privately in Japan for ¥30,000,000-50,000,000 ($280,000-$470,000). Public auction sales are extremely rare.
Legacy
The Nismo 270R was Nismo's proof of concept — showing that limited-edition, factory-tuned R32 GT-Rs could be built and sold at a premium. The concept was later repeated with the R33 400R (44 built, much larger production than the 270R) and the R34 Z-Tune (20 built, same volume as the 270R).
For R32 collectors, the 270R is the rarest and most exclusive R32 variant ever produced. It's a reminder that the R32 GT-R era wasn't just about race homologation — it was also about Nismo flexing its engineering capabilities through extremely limited production runs.
