While the drifting world obsesses over the Silvia S-chassis, Nissan built another rear-wheel-drive platform powered by the same engine family that offers comparable performance at a fraction of the cost. The Nissan Cefiro A31, produced from 1988 to 1994, shares the RB-series engine with the Skyline and delivers a drift-capable chassis that remains genuinely affordable.

Platform Overview

The Cefiro A31 sits on Nissan's C platform, shared with the Laurel C33 and the Skyline R32 sedan. The wheelbase of 2,550mm is identical to the R32, and the front and rear subframes are closely related, meaning many Skyline suspension components bolt directly onto the Cefiro. This parts compatibility is one of the A31's greatest strengths.

From the factory, the A31 was offered with three engine options in the JDM market. The base model received the RB20E, a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-six producing 125 horsepower. The mid-range got the RB20DE with 155 horsepower. The version that matters for performance builds is the RB20DET, which delivered 215 horsepower from its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-six.

The transmission options included a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic. Finding a manual-equipped A31 is essential for a proper drift build, though automatic-to-manual swaps are straightforward thanks to the shared platform architecture with the Skyline.

Why the A31 Works for Drifting

The Cefiro's front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a long hood and compact rear overhang gives it natural drift proportions. The wheelbase is long enough to provide stability during sustained slides but short enough to allow quick transitions. The overall weight of approximately 1,300 kg for the RB20DET model is manageable and can be reduced further with interior stripping.

The factory suspension geometry is well-suited to drift modification. The front MacPherson struts accept widely available coilover kits, and the rear multi-link setup provides adjustability that the more common S-chassis semi-trailing arm rear does not. The multi-link rear allows independent adjustment of toe, camber, and thrust angle, which is a significant advantage for tuning drift characteristics.

Steering angle is the A31's primary limitation from the factory. Aftermarket steering angle kits from Wisefab and Parts Shop Max extend the lock by modifying the lower control arm geometry and adding offset rack spacers. With a proper angle kit, the A31 can match or exceed S-chassis steering angles.

Engine Options and Swaps

The RB20DET in stock form is a solid starting point. With a boost increase, exhaust upgrade, and a front-mount intercooler, 280-300 horsepower is readily achievable on the factory turbo. A Garrett GT2860RS or similar hybrid turbo extends the range to 350-380 horsepower on stock internals.

The RB25DET swap is the most popular upgrade path. The 2.5-liter engine from the Skyline R33 GTS-T drops in with minimal modification. The additional displacement provides significantly more low-end and mid-range torque, making the car easier to drive in drift applications where throttle modulation is critical. On a stock-internal RB25DET with bolt-ons and a quality tune, 350-400 horsepower is achievable and reliable.

The RB26DETT swap is the prestige option. The swap requires custom engine mounts, a modified oil pan for clearance, and either a custom or adapted wiring harness. Budget $8,000-$15,000 for a properly executed RB26 swap including the engine purchase.

SR20DET swaps are less common but have their advocates. The shorter, lighter SR20 improves the A31's weight distribution and reduces front-end mass. The swap requires custom mounts and a modified transmission crossmember, but kits are available from several Japanese and Australian fabricators.

Chassis Preparation for Drift

Coilover selection should prioritize adjustability over outright stiffness. Tein Flex Z, HKS Hipermax, and BC Racing BR-series coilovers are all proven options. Budget $800-$2,000 depending on brand and adjustability.

Differential upgrade is mandatory for serious drifting. A 2-way mechanical LSD from Cusco, KAAZ, or OS Giken provides the locked rear end necessary for sustained drift angles. The A31 shares its differential housing with the R32 Skyline, so Skyline LSD units are a direct fit. Budget $600-$1,200.

Subframe and chassis reinforcement addresses the A31's tendency to flex under aggressive drifting loads. Weld-in subframe connectors between the front and rear subframe mounting points significantly improve chassis rigidity. The A31's four-door sedan body is inherently less rigid than a coupe, making reinforcement more important.

Brake upgrades for drift use prioritize modulation over stopping power. Z32 300ZX front brake calipers bolt onto the A31 with appropriate brackets, providing a significant increase in brake capacity. Pair with Hawk DTC-60 or Project Mu HC+ pads for track reliability.

Suspension Geometry Setup

Front alignment: -3.0 to -4.0 degrees of camber provides grip during initiation. Maximize caster for improved steering feel. Set toe to zero or slightly toe-out (1-2mm per side) for quicker turn-in.

Rear alignment: -1.5 to -2.0 degrees of camber balances grip with controllable traction breakaway. Toe should be set to 2-3mm toe-in per side for stability during sustained slides.

Ride height should be 25-30mm lower than stock at the front and 20-25mm lower at the rear. Ensure adequate clearance for steering angle kit operation.

Current Market and Buying Advice

The A31 Cefiro remains one of the most affordable RWD JDM platforms available. In Japan, clean RB20DET-equipped manual examples sell for $3,000-$8,000. Even after import costs, a landed A31 represents outstanding value compared to equivalent S-chassis or Skyline prices.

Prioritize: manual transmission, RB20DET engine, minimal rust, and a straight body with intact panels. The A31 Cefiro rewards builders who appreciate substance over hype.
