Motul 8100 X-clean 5W-40 Synthetic Oil Review (5L)

Motul 8100 X-clean 5W-40 is the Low-SAPS variant of the X-Cess oil. Same Motul brand, different additive package. Best for emissions-sensitive JDM builds.

Motul makes two 5W-40 variants in the 8100 line: X-Cess Gen 2 (full SAPS — sulfated ash, phosphorus, sulfur — additives for max protection) and X-clean (Low-SAPS, formulated for engines with catalytic converters and DPFs that demand reduced ash content).

TL;DR

X-clean is the right Motul 5W-40 for engines where catalytic converter health matters — most modern JDM engines with smog-state requirements. The Low-SAPS additive package protects without overloading exhaust catalyst material. X-Cess offers slightly higher base protection but at the cost of higher cat ash content over time.

  • Viscosity: 5W-40
  • Format: 5-liter jug
  • Specs met: API SP, ACEA C3 (Low-SAPS), MB 229.51, BMW LL-04, VW 502 00/505 01, MS-9213
  • Additive profile: Low-SAPS — reduced ash content for cat protection
  • Drain interval: 7,500-10,000 miles conservative

Pros

  • Emissions-system safe. Low-SAPS chemistry doesn't overload cats over time.
  • OEM-compliant for European brands. Mercedes, BMW, VW with DPF/cat systems specifically require Low-SAPS oils.
  • Same Motul build quality as X-Cess. Same anti-shear, same cold-flow, same Group III/IV blend base.
  • Cleaner combustion residues. Less ash buildup on intake valves over long-term use.

Cons

  • Slightly less anti-wear protection than X-Cess. X-Cess has higher ZDDP equivalents; X-clean balances ZDDP against emissions compliance.
  • More expensive than American synthetics. Same $52 European-premium pricing as X-Cess.
  • Wrong viscosity for many modern Hondas. 0W-20 spec'd engines shouldn't use 5W-40.
  • Less retail availability than Mobil 1. Online ordering is the reliable path.

Who It's For

  • Emissions-state JDM owners where smog test compliance matters annually.
  • Modern JDM engines (2010+) with catalytic converter health concerns.
  • Owners running aftermarket exhausts with cats still in place — protect the cat investment.
  • OEM-spec European-cousin engines (Honda Civic Type R FK8 with K20C1 turbo benefits from Low-SAPS oil).
  • Skip on track-only or off-emissions builds (X-Cess is slightly higher protection).

How It Compares

  • vs Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen 2 5W-40 ($52): X-Cess wins on raw anti-wear; X-clean wins on cat compatibility. Match to your build's emissions situation.
  • vs Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 (~$35): Mobil 1 ESP is the U.S. Low-SAPS option. Comparable category, slightly cheaper.
  • vs Castrol Edge LL 5W-30 (~$35): Another Low-SAPS option for European-cousin builds.

Bottom Line

Motul 8100 X-clean 5W-40 is the right Motul oil for emissions-conscious JDM builds where cat protection matters. Lower ash content protects exhaust catalyst material over years; the trade-off is slightly less raw anti-wear protection than X-Cess. For modern emissions-spec engines, this is the better Motul choice.
