Subaru Impreza WRX STI (GRB): The Hatchback STI
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI GRB (2008-2014) was Subaru's first hatchback STI — a controversial break from the traditional sedan body style. The GRB arrived at a moment when Subaru was trying to modernize and diversify, and the hatchback body was part of that strategy. Enthusiasts were initially divided. Over time, the hatch grew on most fans, and the GRB became a respected STI in its own right.
The New Platform
The GRB was built on Subaru's all-new Impreza platform, first launched in 2007. Body styles were:
- Impreza WRX STI Hatchback (GRB): The standard STI body
- Impreza WRX STI Sedan (GVB) (JDM and Europe, added 2010): A sedan variant, released after the hatchback controversy
- Impreza WRX STI Spec C: Stripped homologation model
All GRB STIs used the EJ257 engine (now revised) producing 305 hp in US spec, with revised turbos and intake systems for improved response.
Chassis Improvements
The GRB chassis was a significant step forward:
- Stiffer body: ~20% more rigid than the previous GDB
- Revised suspension: Double-wishbone rear replaced the GDB's multi-link setup
- New Brembo brakes: 4-piston front, 2-piston rear
- New DCCD: Refined driver-controlled center differential
- Lighter weight: 1,510 kg (hatchback), 150 kg less than the Bugeye Bugeye (partially)
Sales Response
The GRB hatchback was not a sales success initially. Subaru sold fewer STIs in 2008 than in 2007. Enthusiasts complained the hatch was "less serious" than the sedan, and many potential buyers held onto their older GDBs.
Subaru responded in 2010 by adding the GVB sedan back — a sedan STI on the same platform. This variant was more popular in Japan and Europe. The US market continued with the hatchback.
Today's Market
GRB STIs are now in the "reasonable used performance car" phase:
- Clean hatchback (2008-2010): $15,000-$25,000
- Clean hatchback (2011-2014): $18,000-$30,000
- GVB Sedan (rare in US): $25,000-$40,000
- Spec C (JDM only): $30,000-$50,000
Legacy
The GRB STI represents Subaru's transition from WRC-era analog performance to the modern refined era. It was the last STI before the WRX and STI diverged (the 2015+ WRX STI became its own model, no longer an Impreza variant). For drivers who want a relatively affordable AWD turbo performance car with Subaru's characteristic boxer sound and rally DNA, the GRB is a solid choice.
