Toyota Mark II JZX90: The Pre-Chaser Legend
The Toyota Mark II JZX90 (1992-1996) predates the more famous JZX100 Chaser and is often overshadowed by its successor. But the JZX90 was the first Toyota sedan to come with the 1JZ-GTE twin-turbo from the factory, and it was the platform that proved the concept that would later make the JZX100 famous. For drifters and enthusiasts who know the difference, the JZX90 Mark II is the original cult classic.
The JZX90 Chassis
The Mark II JZX90 was built on a longer-wheelbase version of the Mark II platform:
- Wheelbase: 2,705 mm
- Layout: Longitudinally-mounted front engine, rear-wheel-drive
- Transmission: 5-speed manual (Tourer V) or 4-speed automatic
- Differential: Viscous LSD on Tourer V
- Curb weight: 1,400 kg — heavy for a sports-oriented sedan
The 1JZ-GTE in Its Original Application
The JZX90 Mark II Tourer V used the same 1JZ-GTE found in later JZX100 and JZA80 Supra applications:
- Displacement: 2.5L (2,491cc) inline-six
- Twin-turbo: CT12A turbochargers
- Output: 280 hp gentleman's limit (actual 300+ hp in many examples)
The engine was rated identically to the later JZX100's 1JZ-GTE, but the JZX90's tuning was slightly softer for the sedan's more refined role. Many JZX90 Mark II Tourer V owners upgraded to sports exhausts and ECU chips for increased output.
Mark II Tourer V vs Chaser Tourer V
The Mark II and Chaser shared the JZX90 platform but had different marketing positioning:
- Mark II: Positioned as a mature luxury sedan with sporty options
- Chaser: Positioned as a more athletic sedan aimed at younger buyers
Both used the same 1JZ-GTE in the Tourer V trim. Both had the same chassis. The Chaser's styling was sharper and younger; the Mark II's styling was more conservative.
In the drift scene, the JZX90 Mark II was slightly less popular than the JZX100 Chaser, but many drifters preferred it for its slightly sharper steering response and older, more pure chassis tuning.
Today's Market
JZX90 Mark II Tourer Vs are now eligible for US import (under the 25-year rule). Clean Japanese-market examples trade for $15,000-$30,000 depending on condition and drift history. Tourer V manual examples with matching engines and chassis are the most valuable.
Legacy
The JZX90 Mark II is the forgotten older sibling of the JZX100 Chaser. It proved that Toyota could build a 1JZ-GTE sedan that was fast, refined, and tunable. For enthusiasts who value the original over the famous successor, the JZX90 is the answer.
