Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII: Introduced to America

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, launched in January 2003 in Japan and April 2003 in North America, was the first Evo sold in America. It was a seismic moment in JDM culture — Americans could finally buy a new Evo from a Mitsubishi dealer without going through the import black market. The VIII became the enthusiast chassis that defined the 2000s for American import tuners, competing directly with the Subaru WRX STI in showrooms and on streets.

The CT9A Evolution Platform (Continued)

The Evo VIII used a refined version of the CT9A chassis introduced with the VII:

  • Chassis rigidity: Further improved over the VII
  • Engine: 4G63T with MIVEC (variable valve timing) on the RS model
  • Power: 280 PS Japanese catalog, 276 hp US spec (slightly detuned for emissions)
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual (standard), 6-speed manual (MR model only)
  • AWD: ACD + AYC carryover from VII

The VIII introduced a new front fascia with aggressive intakes, revised rear fender flares, and Bilstein shocks on the Evo VIII MR variant.

US Market Variants

For the American market, Mitsubishi USA offered:

  • Evo VIII: The base car. 5-speed manual only. $29,990 MSRP.
  • Evo VIII MR: The enthusiast special. 6-speed manual, Bilstein shocks, revised suspension. $34,990 MSRP.
  • Evo VIII SSL (Sport Sedan Limited): A luxury-focused variant.

US sales in 2003 were a surprise hit. Mitsubishi USA sold more Evos than projected, and the car immediately became the performance reference point for the $30-35k segment.

WRC and Rally Results

The Evo VIII competed in the WRC (World Rally Championship) in the MR4 World Rally Car class. Drivers included Gilles Panizzi and Gianluigi Galli. The VIII was a competent but not dominant WRC competitor — Subaru's Impreza WRX STI of the era was winning more rallies.

More significantly, the Evo VIII was the dominant chassis in Super 2000 rally across multiple national championships: Italian Rally, British Rally, Spanish Rally, and Asia-Pacific Rally. At the grassroots and club level, the Evo VIII was the fastest car you could buy.

Production Numbers

Total Evo VIII production: approximately 35,700 units from January 2003 to March 2005. This was more than the VII (17,640) because of US sales. About 7,000-8,000 Evo VIIIs were sold in North America.

Today's Market

The Evo VIII is the most common Evo in the US because it was officially imported. Clean examples trade for $25,000-$40,000 depending on mileage. The Evo VIII MR with the 6-speed and Bilstein shocks commands a premium — clean examples bring $40,000-$60,000.

Legacy

The Evo VIII is the Evo that put Mitsubishi on the American map. For a generation of US tuners, the Evo VIII was their first factory-available AWD performance car. It became the default choice for amateur rally, autocross, and time attack. The 4G63T engine's reliability and tunability made it popular with drag racers, and "Evo VIII" became shorthand for "serious JDM performance" in American import culture.

Without the Evo VIII, Mitsubishi USA would have never had the credibility to sell the Evo IX, X, or even consider the current generation of performance vehicles. It was the gateway.
