Smokey Nagata's M3 Record Run
Smokey Nagata's BMW M3 record run is one of the strangest moments in JDM history. In 2007, the famous Top Secret tuner — who had become globally famous for his 197 mph Supra run on a British M-road in 2001 — turned his attention to a tuned BMW M3 for a similar attempt. The car, prepared by Top Secret, achieved a top speed of 196 mph on a public European road in 2007, demonstrating that Top Secret could apply their philosophy to non-Japanese platforms.
The Build
The Top Secret M3 build was significant:
- Engine: Heavily modified BMW S65 V8
- Output: 700+ hp from extensive modifications
- Transmission: Reinforced gearbox
- Aerodynamics: Custom Top Secret aero package
- Body: BMW M3 (E46 generation) painted gold to match Nagata's signature Supra
- Cooling: Multiple intercoolers and oil coolers
- Suspension: Race-spec setup
The Record Attempt
The actual top speed run was conducted on a public European road. Reports vary on the exact location and circumstances, but the car achieved approximately 196 mph (315 km/h) — slightly slower than Nagata's 1997 Supra run of 197 mph but still extraordinary for a public road attempt.
The footage was filmed and released by Top Secret as part of their marketing material. Like the original 1997 Supra run, it generated international attention.
Cultural Significance
The Smokey M3 run was significant because:
- Demonstrated cross-platform skill: Top Secret could tune BMWs, not just Japanese cars
- Continued the Top Secret mythology: Built on Nagata's reputation as the high-speed tuner
- Bridged JDM and European tuning: Showed that JDM tuning techniques could work on European platforms
- Generated international press: Like the original Supra run
Legacy
The Top Secret M3 is a footnote compared to the famous Gold Supra, but it's important context for understanding Nagata's influence beyond JDM specifically. His tuning philosophy — extreme power, top-speed focus, willingness to test on public roads — applied successfully to BMW chassis as well as Toyota.
For Top Secret historians, the M3 run shows the shop's technical breadth.
