The Pandem R35 GT-R — Wide-Body Reimagining

The Pandem R35 GT-R wide-body kit, designed by Miura Kei (founder of Pandem and Rocket Bunny), is one of the most influential aftermarket modifications in modern JDM history. Released in the early 2010s, the Pandem R35 transformed the already-distinctive R35 GT-R into a wider, more aggressive interpretation that became the signature look for tuner R35s worldwide. Miura's design philosophy — extreme fender flares, aggressive aero, distinctive proportions — has been copied countless times.

Miura Kei and Pandem

Miura Kei founded Pandem (formerly known as TRA Kyoto) in the late 1990s as a Japanese aftermarket body kit designer. His early work on Datsun 240Z and 510 wide-body kits established his reputation. By the 2010s, Miura had transitioned to modern Japanese cars, and his Pandem R35 kit became the defining aftermarket R35 modification.

The Pandem aesthetic combines:

  • Massive fender flares — extending the body width significantly
  • Custom front bumpers — aggressive and aerodynamic
  • Custom rear bumpers and diffusers — race-inspired design
  • GT-style rear wings — visible downforce additions
  • Side skirts — deep, aggressive profile

The R35 Pandem Kit

For the Nissan R35 GT-R, Miura's kit transforms the car into something visually distinct from a stock GT-R:

  • Front fenders pushed out 50+ mm
  • Rear fenders pushed out 70+ mm
  • Custom front bumper with integrated splitter
  • Rear bumper with custom diffuser
  • GT-style rear wing
  • Distinctive Pandem aesthetic throughout

The kit is bolt-on (not welded) but requires significant body work for proper fitment.

Cultural Influence

The Pandem R35 has appeared in:

  • Top Drift events worldwide
  • SEMA shows as featured builds
  • Need for Speed games as a featured customization option
  • Countless YouTube build videos
  • Magazine features in Japanese, American, and European publications

The Pandem aesthetic has been copied by other body kit designers (Liberty Walk, Rocket Bunny, etc.), but Miura's original is generally considered the most refined version.

Iconic Examples

Several specific Pandem R35 builds have become famous:

  • The "Naoki" Pandem R35: A high-profile show build that has appeared in multiple magazines
  • The Pandem Kuhl Racing R35: A track-focused interpretation
  • Various SEMA show cars: Each year features at least one Pandem R35

Legacy

The Pandem R35 GT-R is the defining wide-body interpretation of the modern Japanese supercar. Miura's design has influenced hundreds of similar kits, and the Pandem aesthetic has become synonymous with extreme JDM tuning. For R35 owners who want their car to stand out, the Pandem kit is the reference modification.

It's also a reminder that aftermarket design can elevate a manufacturer's vision — Nissan didn't make the R35 look this aggressive, but the JDM tuning community did.
