Nismo R34 GT-R 400R: The 1999 Limited Edition
The Nismo R34 GT-R 400R (released in 1999) is one of the rarest and most powerful R34 variants ever produced. Built by Nismo as a limited-edition demonstration of what their tuning could achieve on the brand-new R34 platform, only a handful were produced before Nissan launched their own factory R34 V-Spec II program. The 400R was Nismo's statement that the R34 could go beyond the gentleman's agreement 280 PS and deliver true performance to wealthy collectors.
The Build
The Nismo R34 400R included:
- Engine: Heavily modified RB26DETT
- Output: 400 PS catalog (the "400R" name)
- Internals: Forged pistons, billet rods, upgraded valvetrain
- Turbos: Larger HKS or Garrett units
- Body: Nismo aerodynamic package with carbon fiber components

Today's Market
When Nismo R34 400Rs come to market, prices are stratospheric:
- Confirmed authentic examples: $1+ million
- Concours-condition: $1.5-2 million
- Provenance with original Nismo documentation: Premium pricing
The 400R is one of the most valuable R34 variants ever sold.
Legacy
The Nismo R34 400R is a forgotten gem of JDM history. Most enthusiasts know about the Nismo Z-Tune (the famous 20-unit special) but the 400R came first and established the template for what Nismo could achieve when given freedom to push the R34 platform.
For Nismo collectors and R34 historians, the 400R is essential. It's the bridge between the production R34 GT-R and the eventual Z-Tune masterpiece.
