Katsuhiro Ueo: The D1 Grand Prix Legend

Katsuhiro Ueo is one of the most respected D1 Grand Prix drifters. Known for his aggressive entry speeds, his Team Orange tuning shop, and his AE86 Trueno drift cars, Ueo was one of the elite drivers of the D1 Grand Prix era. His driving style combined technical precision with visible passion, making him a crowd favorite throughout the 2000s.

Team Orange

Ueo is the founder of Team Orange, a drift team and tuning shop based in Tokyo. Team Orange has been involved in D1 Grand Prix from its founding, with multiple cars competing in both the Japanese championship and Formula Drift internationally.

The shop specializes in high-level drift car preparation for professional competition — not street drifting. Their cars are purpose-built for drift competition, with custom chassis work, race-spec engines, and aerodynamic packages.

The AE86 Connection

Ueo's trademark car for many years was a heavily-modified Toyota AE86 Trueno. At a time when most drift drivers had switched to the Silvia S15 or Nissan 180SX, Ueo kept the AE86 competitive through aggressive engine swaps (including 4A-GE Silvertop, 20V, and even SR20DET conversions), chassis work, and driving skill.

The AE86's lightness and balance gave Ueo an advantage on tight technical sections of D1 GP courses, where the heavier Silvias struggled. His AE86 runs became must-see content at D1 events.

D1 Grand Prix Competition

Ueo's D1 Grand Prix results:

  • Multiple podium finishes: Regular top-3 competitor
  • Team Orange victories: The shop's cars won D1 events driven by Ueo and teammates
  • 2001 season: One of the first D1 GP events he entered
  • 2003-2008: Peak competition years with Team Orange

Formula Drift USA

Ueo also competed in Formula Drift USA during the 2000s and early 2010s. His international appearances brought Japanese drift techniques to American audiences and helped establish Formula Drift as a legitimate global sport. Ueo's FD appearances were well-received by American drift fans who had grown up watching Initial D and wanted to see "real" Japanese drifters.

Driving Style

Ueo's driving characteristics:

  • Very aggressive entries: Willing to commit at high speeds
  • Visible car control: Watching him work the steering wheel was almost theatrical
  • Consistent angles: Despite aggression, maintained clean drift angles
  • Team-focused: Worked closely with Team Orange engineers on car setup

Legacy

Katsuhiro Ueo is part of the core elite of D1 Grand Prix drivers — the generation that defined what professional drifting looks like. His Team Orange operation continues to be a respected drift team and tuning shop, and his AE86 drift cars are part of the lineage connecting Tsuchiya's original AE86 touge runs to modern competitive drift.

For fans of Japanese drift culture, Ueo represents the driver who stayed loyal to the AE86 when everyone else had moved on — and proved that the old chassis could still compete at the top level with the right driver behind the wheel.
